SunMate Comes in a Variety of Support Pressures and Thicknesses
To determine which cushion size and support pressure you need, you may consider personal preference, body weight, physical health, maintenance and safety requirements.
- Soft is commonly used where pressure-sensitive areas or mild deformations are present, or to support a child or small, lightweight person.
- Medium provides comfort and support for a wide range of body weights, from 90-300 lb.
- Firm supports weights over 200 lb., or may be used in hot, humid climates, where it softens slightly, to perform more like a Medium cushion.
DSI's customer service representatives are available to assist with cushion selection. The charts below may also be helpful.
Soft, Medium, or Firm?
This chart can be used as an aid in the selection of SunMate and Laminar cushions. For example, if a person weighs 180 lb and has a large frame, he would trace the vertical line corresponding to 180 lb up to the horizontal range to either side of the L (large) label. This person would be most likely to experience optimum support with a SunMate Medium cushion.

Cushion thickness is largely a matter of taste. Cushions less than 1.5" thick generally do not provide maximum support and are only recommended for use in conjunction with another SunMate cushion. Cushions more than 4" thick are usually in excess of body support requirements. See the "Support Pressure Rating" chart.
Support Pressure Rating (PSI)
The average support pressure is found by dividing the weight of the person by the area of the sitting imprint measured in square inches. (See "Calculating Seating Pressure" illustration). A support pressure in the range of 0.9 to 1.0 PSI is typical for an average-weight person.

Calculating Seating Pressure
A person sitting on a seat cushion is supported by the area of their body that is in contact with the cushion surface. The typical contact area of a seat cushion is shown in the figure.
